On the way on the Maare-and-Thermen trail

Last week I was with my colleague Sarah together on the Maare-und-Thermen-Pfad. We wanted to take a look at the newly established leisure spots between Ulmen and Lutzerath.
From our meeting point at the Jungferweiher, we walked through the pretty town to the Maar, which was still quiet and peaceful so early in the morning.

Here began the first ascent up to the castle. Good that it was still cool. Even so, we were glad when we finally reached the inside of the castle ruins and could enjoy a view back to the Maar before our descent back to the city began. Our companion: thousands of thick snails.

We first climbed along field and forest paths before descending into the valley of the wild Üssbach. Since the sun was shining strongly from the blue sky in the meantime, we made our first drinking stop at the next leisure spot, at the corn mill.

After passing through the small Eifel village of Wollmerath, we headed uphill to the Wollmerather Kopp. The Wollmerather Kopp is a protected rock formation made of lava ejecta. It was only in 2013 that the former quarrying area was cleared and made accessible to the public by incorporating it into the Maare-und-Thermen trail. At the leisure spot there, we were able to rest our legs during a midday rest.

After a final descent into the shady forest, we then climbed high up to Lutzerath. Exhausted and sweaty, we reached our destination - but also with a happy smile on our faces.

Next, we plan to hike the second part of the Maare-und-Thermen-Pfad, which leads from Lutzerath to Bad Bertrich. But then maybe on a somewhat cooler day ...
