The "Manderscheider Burgenstieg mit Rittersteig" combines the fascination of the Middle Ages with the unique landscape of the Volcanic Eifel. The 5.4-kilometer half-day tour leads through the idyllic nature of the Eifel and around the charming small town of Manderscheid, which is known throughout Germany for its ancient castles.
First, the trail runs through some of the streets of the small town, which still bears the traces of times long past in many corners. After that, the trail dives into light, quiet forests on partly alpine-like paths and challenging climbs before it leads down into the enchanted valley of the Lieser. Over hill and dale it then leads up to the Eifel view "Belvedere", from where there is a dreamlike view of the imposing Manderscheider castles. The circular route leads to the foot of the fortress, which was as impressive then as it is now, and to the "Rittersteig", a rock path that was made passable again only a few years ago. Finally, the ascent leads up to the "Kaisertempelchen" (little temple of the emperor), where the hiker again enjoys an incomparable panorama of the medieval ruins.
Many scenic viewpoints and always new perspectives on the famous Manderscheider castles make the "Manderscheider Burgenstieg mit Rittersteig" one of the most beautiful hiking experiences in all of Germany!
Our tips along the way:
Anyone who has already walked around the Manderscheide castles on the Burgenstieg will know their beauty from afar. But also seen from close up, these old walls unfold a unique fascination that should not be missed.
After the hike, do you feel like a refreshment? The Manderscheider Burgcafé tempts you with cake specialties and fragrant coffee.
For those who want to immerse themselves in the volcanic past of the region, the Maar Museum is also interesting during a visit to Manderscheid. How were the maars formed and what is the story about the Eckfelder Urpferdchen? Anyone who stops by the Maar Museum will soon know.
If you want to try something completely new, you can stop by the candle factory Moll. In addition to the small shop, where you can buy mustard and soaps from their own production, you can visit the candle workshop or make a candle yourself.
