The upper castle is located on a flattened mountain top. Your discovery tour therefore begins with many steps. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view over Manderscheid and the Lieser Valley. As you can still see from the ruins, the castle had an almost triangular outer wall and a five-story keep. In the meantime, you can enter this tower again, climb the stairs inside and look down on the Niederburg. With a little imagination you can guess what a cauldron of fire the narrow Lieser Valley was in the Middle Ages. Dangers lurked everywhere.
In the 12th century, the lords of Manderscheid ruled in the Niederburg. In the Middle Ages they were an important noble family. Under William V, the until then rather manageable castle was expanded into a magnificent seat of power with fortifications - you can still see that today during your visit.

This is the highlight of the Historical Castle Festival at Niederburg Manderscheid, which takes place every year at the end of August.
