One hike - Three perspectives

This is how Anne Schmitz experienced the hike along the VulkaMaar trail:
The long-awaited spring finally makes an appearance. Before the green roof closes the Vulkaneifel, we set out to find out for ourselves: Is the VulkaMaar Trail really the "Most Beautiful Hiking Trail in Germany"?
For a long time the winter had us firmly in its grip. Snow, frost and ice have long endured in the Volcanic Eifel. The last cold days are now finally over. Now that the first rays of sunshine have made it, we start hiking. We discover how not only nature has awakened. On the Lieserpfad parallel running piece we admire the castles, discover the castle pond in the valley, jump over small streams and shoot many a photo about an awakening nature. At the beginning we still wear hats and gloves, then we get warm due to the warming sun and the steep and steeper ascents, for example through the Wolf Gorge and up the Mosenberg. The one or other fallen tree has us shows that winter has just moved out after all.
We walk parallel to the Lieser, change to the Kleine Kyll, climb up the Mosenberg and past the outdoor classroom, to the Windsborn crater. We hike through the original villages of Bettenfeld and Meerfeld. See chickens, horses, squirrels, giant ants and cattle. Original village stores and well-kept village squares invite you to linger. Here, quite classically, the "world is still in order". The day's destination is the Meerfelder Maar, the start of the Cosmos Cycle Path and one of the postcard motifs of the Volcanic Eifel.
Day 1 of our hike has given us a sunny and exceedingly conciliatory hiking day. The stage of about 14 kilometers receives the conclusion "particularly worthwhile" from us. The tranquility and yet the different sounds of nature radiate calm and a serenity that seems to be lost to us in many ways in everyday life.
The 2nd day also begins with a morning dew and a chill, which is however quickly driven out of us. The steep climb from the Meerfelder Maar up to the Landesblick at over 500 NN makes our body temperature rise. The effort is rewarded, from the tower we can only marvel as always. The vastness of the Maartricher is clearly visible from above. The 360° panoramic view over the Eifel in the early morning misty dew is just wonderful and admirable. Towards Bleckhausener Mühle we walk downhill past the Sauerseifen and change to the other stream side of the Kleine Kyll. Today we meet cattle, deer, squirrels and again and again loudly the woodpecker. The idyll and tranquility and the murmur of the Kleine Kyll on the way are a perfect change from the daily office routine. There are no opportunities to stop along the way, but there were provisions from the backpack and small huts and benches for a break along the way.
It's amazing how quickly you can cover another 14 kilometers of the typical Eifel terrain with the "up and down" and admire such a unique nature on the way, if you direct your senses to it. Of course, we switch back to the Lieser Valley just before Manderscheid to end our hike on the Lieser Trail with a conciliatory view of the Manderscheid castles. Spring flowers are blooming in the spa park and the perfect hiking days around Manderscheid are now unfortunately over. Also today we experienced a hike that deserves the name "Premium".
It is precisely in extraordinary times like these that we learn to appreciate anew how beautiful our homeland is. We live and work where others go on vacation. And one thing that recent times have shown us - you should always have a positive outlook on everything - is that it is not absolutely necessary to move out into the wide world. Our home country has so many facets and so much to offer. You just have to be on the road with open eyes and enjoy the Vulkaneifel to the fullest!
Yes! That is our conclusion. The VulkaMaar path would have what it takes, would also deserve it and is in our eyes "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2021"! Vote still quickly for us!

This is how Anja Uller experienced the hike along the VulkaMaar trail:
We start at 8:10 a.m. at the Tourist Information Manderscheid in beautiful weather (temperature about 5°C) first towards the Lieserpfad. Already after a short time on the path, which always inspires me, we can enjoy the first view of the Manderscheid castles.
We continue past the Robertskanzel with a view of the Burgweiher, accompanied the whole time by the sound of the Lieser, which meanders through the valley like a silver ribbon this morning. After a mini break at Philosopheneck, we continue on a narrow path to Weifelsjunk, where we have a rewarding view into the Lieser valley. Then we leave the Lieserpfad in the direction of Wolfsschlucht and Horngraben. We cross the road and follow the VulkaMaar path signs into the forest and into the valley of the Kleine Kyll. Arriving at the Germanic bridge, which is also part of the mindfulness trail, we enjoy the view of the waterfall of the Kleine Kyll. We cross the bridge and turn right to the Wolf Gorge, where bizarre basalt and lava formations can be found. In this gorge, the Horngraben meets the Kleine Kyll and a narrow path winds its way up over the boulders. After a short rest with a view into the Wolfsschlucht (Wolf Gorge), we continue our hike towards Mosenberg. There, the Vulka Maar trail leads through the Mosenberg Volcano Experience Park, a paradise for those interested in geology. We continue to the summit hut on the Mosenberg. The ascent is quite strenuous, but we are rewarded by a magnificent view of Manderscheid and Bettenfeld. After a short refreshment we continue our way to the Windsborn crater lake and enjoy there the perfect silence of the mystic water. Now we descend to Bettenfeld, past the parking lot of the Volcano Experience Park and through the village. The path continues towards Meerfeld, down what the locals call the "Schallerpedchen", where we end up at the entrance to Meerfeld. We continue through the village, where we have to leave several refreshment stops "on the right" due to the pandemic, on our left the Meerfelder Maar, and through the Meerbachtal towards the Kosmosradweg. For today our hike ends here. Tomorrow we will tackle the second part of the VulkaMaar trail.
In again beautiful hiking weather we start shortly after 8 at the Meerfelder Maar. To the left of the K10, we go steeply uphill in the direction of Landesblick. After about 3 km we reach the lookout tower Landesblick. There a panorama of forests, fields, surrounding villages like Meerfeld with the Maar in the foreground, Bettenfeld, Deudesfeld and Bleckhausen awaits us. The path continues downhill past Sauerseifen, above the Kosmosradweg to the Bleckhausener Mühle in the valley of the Kleine Kyll. There we cross the Kleine Kyll and after a short rest we continue above the Bleckhausener Mühle for about 5 km towards Manderscheid. It is an interplay between uphill and downhill on this winding forest path or trail. After a last steep climb, we reach the cottage village of Moritz, where we cross the L46 and continue our way towards Lieserpfad. We walk along a field path before we reach the Eifelsteig/Lieserpfad in the forest and gradually walk towards the end of our hike on this narrow, varied path. Shortly before Manderscheid, the Manderscheid castles appear in the forest. This time then "from behind", so again a completely different view than at the start on the first day of the VulkaMaar path hike. The end of the hike is the return to the Tourist Information, by walking briefly through the town and the spa gardens.

Dag 1
De dag start met een vleugje mist - vaak betekent dat hier in de Eifel, dat het niet al te lang duurt dat de zon tevoorschijn komt. En zo is het dan ook - tijdens de eerste kilometers verdwijnt de mist en komt de zon. Vandaag staat het eerste deel van het VulkaMaar-Pfad (VulkaMaar pad) op het programma. Dat is een rondwandeling van totaal 26 kilometer. Dat is ons iets te veel van het goede, dus besloten we het VulkaMaar-Pfad in twee etappen te bewandelen. Twee dagen het kantoor uit en de wandelschoenen in!
Het VulkaMaar pad begint bij de GesundLand Tourist Info in Manderscheid en gaat het eerste deel ook over het Lieserpad en de Eifelsteig. Heerlijke uitzichten op de beide burchten met de opkomende zon zorgen voor een perfekte start van de dag. De wandeling gaat in het begin over smalle paden aan rotsen voorbij. Daar waar het aan weerszijden steil naar beneden en naar boven gaat heeft men staalkabels aangebracht die als extra zekerheid dienen. Vanaf de Robertskanzel, tussen de bomen door en met mooi uitzicht, is de Burgweiher (burchten vijver) nog goed te zien. En meteen is weer duidelijk waarom men hier op vakantie komt!
De route draait langzaam richting westen en na het oversteken van de L46 gaat het VulkaMaar pad aan het Kapellenhof voorbij.
Langzaam gaat het naar beneden, het dal in, naar de beek de 'Kleine Kyll'. Het grondgesteente verandert daarmee van leisteen naar het veel hardere basalt - basalt is dan ook het direkte bewijs dat we in volkanisch gebied komen. Het ruisen van de waterval komt snel dichterbij en toont zich bij de Germanenbrug. Een korte pauze en even dit moment genieten voor het verder gaat...Na de brug gaat het rechtsaf en na enkele meters gaat het VulkaMaar pad weer links - we gaan de Wolfs-Schlucht (wolfskloof) in. Men zegt dat hier de laatste wolf van de vorige eeuw geschoten is - maar dat zegt men ook over de Wolfs-Schlucht bij Prüm...
Rechts zijn schitterende basaltzuilen te zien - stille getuigen van lavastromen die hier ooit hun weg baanden. Hiervan gaat het hart van elke geoloog sneller kloppen!
We lopen door de kloof naar boven, langs weelderig groen mos dat voor een prachtig fotomotief zorgt. Boven aangekomen maken we een korte pauze tot bosbewoners de zitbanken in beslag nemen: we zien dat dit het territorium van de grote bosmier is en na onze pauze gaan we aan einige grote mierenhopen voorbij. We volgen de lavastroom (zogenaamde 'Horngraben') die ons naar het 'Vulkan Erlebnis Park' brengt. Dit is eigenlijk een oude lava-groeve. There we find not only an outdoor klaslokaal, but also many information boards and even an exposition of many volcanic minerals.
Het VulkaMaar pad heeft daarmee het eerste deel van zijn naam eer aan gedaan! We gaan verder omhoog - niet te veel praten - we hebben onze adem nodig voor deze klim. Maar dat loont zich: ons wacht een geweldig uitzichtspunt 'Mosenberg' waar we met goed weer tot de Hunsrück kunnen kijken! Na deze flinke klim gaat het over de rug van de Mosenberg vulkaangroep naar de Windsborn krater met een kruis op de hoogste lava-rots. Van daaruit via het stille Eifeldorp Bettenfeld en het "Schallerpedchen" (klein paadje) gaat ons VulkaMaar pad naar het tweede deel van zijn naam: het Meerfelder maar. We lopen door het dorp dat in het maar ligt - een maar is namelijk een bepaalde soort vulkaan(krater). En daarmee lopen we naar het eind van de eerste dag...
Dag 2
We pakken - na een overnachting in het rustige Meerfeld - het VulkaMaar pad weer op, daar waar we gister zijn gestopt en gaan bergopwaarts! Gelukkig is het nog vroeg op de dag - nog genoeg energie aanwezig. Onderweg groeten ons Schotse Hooglanders die zich verwonderen over dit vroege bezoek.
De klim loont zich: bovenop de top staat een uitzichtstoren ("Landesblick") op 515m NAP, die uitzicht biedt over de wijdse omgeving, ver over de omliggende dorpen zoals Meerfeld, Deudesfeld, Bettenfeld en Bleckhausen. Van dit - letterlijk - hoogtepunt gaat het VulkaMaar pad weer een volgend dal in, 'Sauerseifen', waar slechts twee huizen te vinden zijn. In deze heerlijk rustige omgeving treffen we ook op het zogenaamde 'Kosmos' fietspad - een fietsroute van 23km die van Daun naar Meerfeld loopt. Vanaf de Bleckhausener Mühle (molen) gaat het verder door het bos en door het dal met versgroene weide. De Kleine Kyll begeleidt ons met ontspannen gekabbel. In de hut die ineens aan de linkerkant verschijnt, maken we een pauze en nuttigen ons rugzak-proviant...
Het VulkaMaar pad wordt beschreven als "veeleisend" en de voeten kunnen dit bevestigen. De laatste kilometers hebben het nog in zich - de wandelstokken worden uitgepakt. De laatste loodjes wegen het zwaarst! Het gaat verder richting Manderscheid, maar met een laatste kleine omweg om nog een geweldig mooi stuk Lieserpad en Eifelsteig mee te pikken. Zoals de eerste dag start, zo eindigen we de tweede dag: over smalle paden naast rotsen en aan het eind zien we nog eens twee bekenden: de bovenste en de onderste burcht... de Oberburg en de Niederburg... Beide burchten zijn op een separate wandeling, de zogenaamde 'Burgenstieg' te bezoeken. Die wandeling heeft overigens in 2020 de derde prijs gekregen voor 'Duitslands mooiste wandeling'.
De kerk van Manderscheid luidt en het einde van het VulkaMaar pad is daarmee bereikt...
